Images and pirate theme enhance the sense of WONDER that the Stripling Model sets forth. Begin discussion of WONDER and how important it is for children totake part in this activity. Students need to learn HOW to learnWe want students to become lifelong learnersWith Web 2.0 tools, inquiry can be much more engaging than a traditional research projectCan be used across the curriculum
Sample Projects: Inform intended audience of teachers that this Inquiry Process utilizes and enhances students' prior knowledge and understandings. Teachers can use the Stripling Model to assess student learning as well as extend and continue the learning with the wonders and questions students have about topics of study. Math: Shapes Around the World: For this Inquiry Based project students will use their prior knowledge of basic shapes and develop questions in regards to where in the world these kinds of shapes are found. Teacher will read aloud the book titled, "The Greedy Triangle" to supplement students questions and help with beginning research. Students will then investigate at their homes, in their schools, and by looking in magazines for different shapes that they see. Students will share their findings with their small group and work together to construct a project to share. Students can create a Prezi showing what shapes they found in the three different places and include pictures and examples with their information. Students will narrate their presentation as an added form of expression. After all groups have shared, students will refelct by choosing a blackline shape of their choice and creating something real. Example: Circle-waffle, wheel on a bicycle, the sun, speaker on a radio, hamburger bun, quarter, etc... The teacher will video each child with their drawing and make a culminating digital book using Animoto or Windows Movie Maker. Social Studies: Biography Museum: Students will utilize their prior knowledge of Biographies and biographical texts and research an influential person from the past or present. Students will begin by questioning, what truly makes a person influential and setting guidelines for themselves to follow as they choose their individual. As an exmple, use Martin Luther King Jr., whom the students just learned about in Social Studies. Have students list contributions and reasons why he is a good candidate to present to others. Upon choosing individuals students will research information about their individual. Students will use the information to: draw a portrait, create a timeline using Teachnology, create a web description using Kidspiration, create a Wordle with attributes the person possesses, find a quote using Brainy Quote, and locate and print several copy right free images from web sources. Students will compile the research onto a presentation board. They will gather clothing items for a costume and dress as their individual person. They will portray their person and share a short memorized speech about their person with their biography board for parents and other students for the school. The teacher will record the presentations and create a video timeline using Animoto of each person in timline order.
